I spend a great deal of time telling myself what not to write about. Or, to be more precise, what I feel I shouldn’t write about. I’m pretty sure it was Krzysztof Kieslowski – still my favourite director, in case anyone’s interested – who said that he abandoned documentaries in favour of fictional features because the latter allowed him to be more truthful. I believe he was referring to the very specific issue of exposing intimacies and personal situations that one simply couldn’t film in a fly-on-the-wall, documentary format. But I think his statement also hints at the notion that fiction is a kind of shield. A layer of protection. For the author.Continue reading “On Guard”
Okay people, I’ve got a scented cat that’s itching to get out of its bag. For the last two years, I have been writing an anonymous perfume blog (www.Persolaise.com), the success of which led to my being commissioned to write a perfume guide. It’s called Le Snob: Perfume and it’s due to be published in October… so if you’d like to find out more about … Continue reading Guess What… I’ve Got A Book Coming Out!
Some of you already know why, in 2011, this blog was devoted almost exclusively to film reviews: various other writing projects have caused me to be extremely busy since about mid-2010 and I needed to think of something that would allow me to keep DariushAlavi.com ticking over and wouldn’t entail my spending hours agonising over what each subsequent post should be about. Film reviews seemed like a neat, … Continue reading Best Films Of The Year + Hitting The Pause Button
Red Pen Season is over, July is nearly at an end and an empty suitcase appears to have materialised in my study. It must be time for me and the Divine L to embark on another summer adventure. The cross-Channel ferry beckons… Needless to say, there won’t be many posts for the next few weeks, but then there haven’t been many for several months, … Continue reading An Empty Suitcase
Time flies when you’re not blogging. But, by some cruel quirk of physics, it seems to slow down each time you pick up a red biro. Yes indeed, the above statement is a thinly veiled hint to those of you who know what I normally get up to at this time of the year: Red Pen Season has arrived. I won’t say that blog posts … Continue reading An Interesting Record
I know, I know, it’s been ages since I’ve posted anything on this blog. My excuse is that I’m trying to juggle a few other writing projects at the moment, but I couldn’t let the first fortnight of 2011 go by without my traditional look back at the previous year’s film releases. Sadly, I have to say that 2010 was an appalling year as far … Continue reading Film: Best Of 2010
A few lines to apologise for my recent silence. This time, it hasn’t been caused by the usual culprit – the day job – although that has been inordinately hectic for the last few weeks. The real reason is that I’ve been thinking long and hard about the direction in which this blog should go. I’ve probably (?) decided that I won’t shut it down … Continue reading A Clearer Focus
